Course & Content Fidelity

The migration of existing resources from Blackboard Vista to other platforms is an important consideration for assessing the feasibility of any LMS candidate. Care must be taken to identify currently deployed resources.

An important part of the LPR assessment will be assessing the fidelity (accuracy, completeness and integrity) of both the courses (the tools and techniques applied within an instructional construct) and the content (the learning objects disseminated by instructors and the artifacts created by students). In order to determine both the quality of the converted course and content, as well as identify any gaps that may require additional support to complete the migration, each UMassOnline supported campus participating in the LPR will be asked to identify two of their courses to serve as test cases. Interested RFP/RFI respondents will then be asked to migrate these native Vista courses into their respective systems. Once converted, the LPR these courses will be compared from within both the native Vista environment and the vendor's supported environment.

Migration Process

Each responding vendor must include the process for migrating the course and content. The LPR Committee will attempt to migrate the courses as described by the participating vendor.

Integrated Systems

In order to assess the migration of existing integrated systems to an alternative LMS, campuses and UMassOnline will provide a list of the currently deployed scripts, file, configurations etc. that also must be migrated to ensure continued points of integration between the LMS and other enterprise/local services.

Local/Enterprise Scripts/Services

In addition to the various applications and service listed above, UMassOnline maintains several scripts related to: integration (e.g. batch uploads from campus SIS); back-ups; etc. A new platform will require UMassOnline and campuses to review and possibly rewrite various interfaces between services and for scheduled jobs.

Blackboard Vista

Training and Knowledge Management

Complex applications, such as Learning Management Systems, require comprehensive documentation, supporting not only the technical requirements of the application and the supporting infrastructure it rides on, but also "how to" information required by end-users to successfully navigate the system and understand the usability of its various features. In addition, the users of such systems are supported through both in-person and on-demand training.

UMassOnline Documentation

UMassOnline currently provides support for Blackboard Vista via a self-help knowledge base. This resource provides general instructions for both end-users and campus administrators as well as specific issues associated with managing Vista as implemented by UMassOnline.

UMassOnline Training

Training for Blackboard Vista is undertaken on an as needed basis, often when upgrades and patches are installed. Training generally consists of "train the trainer" for new or enhanced functionality and "knowledge transfer" for issue resolution, know bugs, etc.
