Business transaction management (BTM), also known as business transaction monitoringapplication transaction profiling or user defined transaction profiling, is the practice of managing information technology (IT) from a business transaction perspective. It provides a tool for tracking the flow of transactions across IT infrastructure, in addition to detection, alerting, and correction of unexpected changes in business or technical conditions. BTM provides visibility into the flow of transactions across infrastructure tiers, including a dynamic mapping of the application topology.

UMOL began preliminary work to assess transaction monitoring needs in September of 2010. Initially UMOL reached out to UITS, however, while UITS does provide systems monitoring to measure the health of their infrastructure, they do not provide transaction monitoring, mirroring use of end-users.

In addition, UMOL was interested in alerts and notifications in order to manage issues and communications.


UMassOnline originally reached out to UITS to investigate the use of Oracle's Beacons through their Enterprise Management System. This was aborted due to a variety of functionality issues as well as access issues.

UMassOnline currently uses AlertSite for transaction monitoring, and Pingdom for Uptime and Response Time Monitoring and for status notifications and alerts.

Currently, UMassOnline alone provides administrative (technical, operational and financial) services for the Transaction Monitoring service through SmartBear's AlertSite. All UMassOnline organizations have access to transaction monitoring results/reporting of UMassOnline supported systems (see above: "UMassOnline Systems Monitored").


A monthly report should be run and distributed to stakeholders via email. A template is available, with specific information to include.


UMOL does not require licensing or service fees for Transaction Monitoring.

UMOL has contracted with Alertsite for transaction monitoring.

UMOL has contracted with Pingdom for Uptime and Response Time Monitoring.
